Saitek Pro Flight Combat Rudder Pedals

Saitek Pro Flight Combat Rudder Pedals

The Saitek PRO flight COMBAT rudder pedals, not to be confused with the older although very similarly named and looking saitek pro flight rudder pedals that is also reviewed on this site. Saitek have gone back to the drawing board with their initial pedal design and have come out with a newer design that hopes to address some of the hang ups of the last generation flight rudder pedals.

Saitek PRO Flight Combat Rudder Pedals

Interestingly enough, competition for flight pedals is quite sparse. Thrustmaster have yet to bring out any new pedals and the only real competitor within the casual gaming market for flight pedals is the venerable CH Products Pro Pedals.

A quick side by side comparison of saitek flight pedal products shows the following quick differences.

Saitek PRO Flight Combat Rudder Pedals VS Saitek PRO Flight Rudder Pedals

  1. Upgraded foot pedals from plastic to metal.
  2. No bottom lip on the pedals. You can now rest your feet on the floor of the unit which is slightly more realistic.
  3. Adjustable pedal angles, 40, 55 and 70 degrees.
  4. The addition of metal ramp foot plates

Features aside, the look as also been streamlined and made more adult. Gone is the grey and blue and in with black. The only light visible on the pedal itself is now a single green led.

The unit comes in a BIG box. Very impressive. You do not realize just how big the Saitek PRO Flight Combat Rudder Pedals actually are until they arrive at your desktop.  The package consists of pedals, foot ramp and installation cd. Installing the unit is very simple, it was just a matter of plug and play. The pedals were instantly recognized in Windows 7 and assignable without any problems in MS Flight Simulator X. It was not necessary to do any driver installs!

The most impressive thing about the unit is the pedals. Big, metal and solid. The area where you rest your feet on consists of a textured metal surface and if you wear socks than you do not have to worry about your foot slipping… even without the presence of a bottom lip. These are the only pedals you can get for the price that do not have these lips, the comfort factor is immense. I can now rest my foot on the base of the pedal unit, instead of having it resting entirely on the pedals and inadvertently pushing down on the pedals. With the foot resting stably on the base, you do not have to worry about making any undue movements that will show up in game.

Speaking about undue movements, their is a tension knob on the flight pedals. You can turn it clockwise to increase the tension on the pedals, or anti clock wise to loosen up the tension. I found it completely unnecessary to turn up the tension on the pedals. The centering action is very strong. I can rest my foot on the pedals and they will not move. However, I do not have a huge F16 pilot build… for those with a bit more weight behind each leg, than the tension adjust will be a life saver. You can actually dial up the tension quite high on the unit. Note also that as you do this, that it increases friction on the entire pedal movement which makes the return from to the center a slightly slower and more gradual affair.

Update:Saitek PRO Flight Combat Rudder Pedals looks to be on sale at Amazon!

The unit now comes with a metal foot ramp, so for those with tired feet, you can now rest your entire foot of the pedals on a supported ramp. A nice little extra, since the older pedal unit had a step.

For those worried about the small “nutcracking” distance of the CH Pro Pedals, the Saitek PRO Flight Combat Rudder Pedals are spaced very comfortably apart. More than ample room for you comfortably move both legs around a center mounted joystick. The pedals are also very wide.

The only slight niggle with the unit is that because you are now more inclined to rest the ball of the foot on the base of the unit instead of having the foot entirely on the pedals, when you are depressing the pedals, you might end up like me having to make an awkward toe curl motion to extend the range of your pivot. I have small feet, those with bigger feet probably wont even notice. Of course, this really isnt a design issue, its more of an operator (me) usage quirk.

Although only the pedals are made from metal, the rest from plastic, so far the unit seems of a good solid construction. Unlike the previous model, I did not have any experiences with over depressing the pedals and getting them jammed outside the guide rails. Then again, it play flight sims where most often controlled minute adjustments are the order of the day… instead of the gas and brake stomping fury you often see in arcade racers.

Saitek PRO Flight Combat Rudder Pedals Review Conclusions

Loading up FSX for a test, the pedals were detected without issue and easily assigned. The pedals work as advertised. The pedal action is smooth and the strong center detente makes it easy to keep the rudders centered. The addition of a tension knob means the unit can be further adjusted to taste. I had no problems with calibration, got full range of motion on all axes. Assigning the 2 independent pedal axis to differential brakes really brings a whole new level of control and realism to your flight setup. It is now possible to make tighter turns and make smaller adjustments to taxi speed and positioning all without having to touch the joystick.

The Good:

  • Realistic pedal design that allows you to rest your foot on the base of the unit
  • Very wide non slip metal pedals
  • Adjustable tension, good centering action
  • Easy plug and play install

The Bad:

  • No carpet grips! The unit is stable and does not slip on smooth surfaces thanks to the super long non slip rubber feet or velcro pads, but misses out on offering a proper solution for those who have carpeted floors.
  • My unit started to develop a strange squeak emanating from the center dial after 3hrs of light use. The squeak then spontaneously disappeared, hopefully never to return.
  • More expensive than both CH Pro Pedals and the older pro flight rudder pedals

So is it worth upgrading from the flight rudder pedals to the Saitek PRO Flight Combat Rudder Pedals? Unless the pedals you own now are broken. It probably isn’t worth it. From inspection of the innards of the new combat rudder pedals, the pedal mechanism has remained virtually unchanged. If you hated the Saitek PRO Flight Rudder Pedals precisely for its feel and mechanism than the addition of metal pedals probably wont be enough to convince you to come back. However, if you found the CH Pro pedals to be light than the Saitek offering will be the best bet for you!

Robin M Romano,

I have used several different brands and styles of rudder pedals over the years. I first started out with a bulky set of Thrustmaster pedals. These were okay, but the scissors action and nearly flat footed position was clunky and uncomfortable. I next tried the CH Products pedals. This first pair I had was the type that had the joystick plug and did not have the toe brake feature. I next bought the USB version of the CH Products Pro Pedals. These had the toe brake feature which […] Read the rest of the review >

Dogfaceman,

These replaced an earlier version of Saitek pedal which were good themselves, but these are much more robust. Easy install and operation make any lead footed sim-pilot like myself, more secure that the pedals won’t break. Highly recommend!! […] Read the rest of the review >
